Pets and Animal Control Guidelines

The City of Sigourney is committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for both residents and their pets. These guidelines are designed to promote responsible pet ownership, protect public spaces, and ensure the well-being of animals within our community. Compliance with these guidelines is essential for a harmonious living experience for all residents. Please contact the City Clerk at 641-622-3080 for any questions or further clarification.

Leash Laws

In Public Spaces: Pets must be on a leash or under close, direct supervision at all times when outside the owner’s property. This helps ensure both pet and public safety.

Private Property: Owners are responsible for ensuring their pets do not roam freely onto neighboring properties. Proper enclosures or leashing in the yard are recommended.

Noise and Disturbance

Barking and Disturbances: Continuous or excessive barking, especially during quiet hours, is prohibited. If a pet creates a noise disturbance, the owner may be subject to warnings or fines.

Enforcement: Neighbors or community members may report excessive noise to Animal Control, who will investigate and may issue citations for recurring issues.

Animal Waste

Public Clean-Up: Pet owners must clean up all waste deposited by their animals in public areas, including parks, sidewalks, and trails. Waste stations are available at various locations for convenience.

Non-Compliance: Failure to pick up after pets may result in fines. This guideline supports public health and maintains cleanliness in shared spaces.

Dangerous Animals

Definition: Animals displaying aggressive behavior or having a history of attacks may be classified as dangerous and may face restrictions or special requirements.

Reporting Incidents: Residents should report any animal attacks or aggressive behavior immediately to Code Enforcement or the police. Dangerous animals may require removal or specialized containment.

Animal Cruelty and Neglect

Legal Protections: Cruelty, neglect, or abandonment of animals is strictly prohibited. This includes providing insufficient food, water, shelter, or medical care.

Penalties: Violators may face criminal charges, fines, or animal seizure, depending on the severity of the offense. Residents should report suspected abuse to Code Enforcement.
